The United Kingdom’s Got Talent!     by Laura Davies

The United Kingdom is known for being a place full of countryside, tea and rain but we also have an abundance of extremely talented artists lurking about. Dedicated and wonderful people who use their spare time to create beautiful pieces of artwork. After trawling through deviantART.com, I have found just a handful of fantastic artists from different regions of the UK to show off to the world.

From the furthest Northern point of the United Kingdom, Scotland, lives fifteen year old Elsa McBride. She has an amazing talent for creating fantastic pieces of artwork with a great depth and shadow to them, I was completely shocked when I found out that she was so young! My favourite piece of artwork that she has created would have to be “Avec Stylo”, when I first looked at it I thought that it was an unbelievably great drawing but then I saw that it was in fact painted with only black watercolour and I was astounded; it is such a wonderful piece of work and the shadow and detail on it is brilliant. Although, her gallery is full of different pieces, there are some truly excellent ones in there and I believe that with age she can only get even better at what she does and I wish her the best of luck.

Further down the country, in Staffordshire, lives 22 year old Katie Hughes. She is an absolutely wonderful Wildlife Photographer, her photography is beautiful. Her work seems, to me, to capture the essence of each animals personality and there are some stunning shots of animals looking straight into the lens which I absolutely adore. My favourite image would have to be the “Orangutans”, it is a brilliantly emotive photograph that captures such a tender and loving moment between a mother and baby. Even though her gallery does not yet have many images in it, I think that you will thoroughly enjoy looking through the pieces that are there and I wish her great success in her future photography!

Representing Wales we have Simon Kevin Bell, who’s traditional work is outstandingly detailed and a pleasure to look at. This 18 year old blows me away with his incredible drawing abilities, again I was shocked to learn that he was so young. Even though it has already been recognised for being a superb piece of artwork, my favourite illustration in his gallery would have to be “The Tainted Legions of Angmar”; it is a piece of work that you can stare at for absolutely ages and it shows off his intense drawing skills brilliantly. Again, although his gallery does not yet have many pieces of artwork in it, I believe that you will hard pushed not to spend a long time staring at the work that is there and admiring the craftsmanship that has gone into drawing them and I hope that you thoroughly enjoy looking through his gallery!

In the South of the country, Bournemouth, lives Jake Baggaley, also 18 years of age who is a very talented portrait photographer. He has a variety of different pieces in his gallery but I have to say that I especially love his series of blind portraits, as he says himself; there is something very fascinating about taking a portrait photograph of somebody who does not even know what they themselves look like. My favourite of the three is “Blind 1”, in which you can see the whites of the woman’s eyes and whilst you feel sadness for her you cant help but notice the slight smile on her face which is lovely. Jake has some strong and powerful portraits in his gallery and I hope that you take pleasure in looking at his wonderful photography as much as I did!

Last but by no means least, residing in the South West of the country, in Dorset, is 25 year old Gemma Burden. She has a marvellous collection of photography, from architecture to animals, all of which is vibrant and interesting to gaze at. One of my favourite pieces from her gallery is a photograph entitled “If Music Be..“, it is of a rose that is led upon a sheet of music from Romeo and Juliet and I think it is brilliantly symbolic of love in all its beauty and tenderness. Although of course, it could easily be taken to show the irony of love, as a simple red rose is one of the things that we commonly use to symbolise the wide variety of emotions that are connected with the word love, as are shown in Shakespeare’s “Romeo and Juliet”. Her close up shots of some of the animals show an amazing amount of patience as well as talent and her architectural photography is simply terrific!

Finally, I would just like to thank all of the artists for taking part and allowing me to use their images.
